A fashion designer wins case over Factory. Caroline Wilcock, a fashion designer now living in London, grew up in Bowburn, County Durham, next to an asbestos factory. As a child, she remembers gathering fallen dust from off of cars and window ledges with friends in order to make asbestos snowballs. As a chalk alternative, they would pick up lumps of asbestos and use it to mark games on the pavement.
Between 1967 and 1983, Wilcock claims she suffered from asbestos poisoning. Forty years later, in 2000, she was diagnosed with mesothelioma.
Taking her case to court against Cape Intermediate Holdings PLC, previously the Cape Asbestos Company, Caroline Wilcock hoped others would benefit from her testimony and statements. She also felt that by coming forward and making public what had happened to her, others who had been exposed to and affected by asbestos would do the same. [read the article]
